The New Republic traces its roots back into the days of the Empire - a time when its leaders and supporters were, at best, a straggling band of rebels who disagreed with the Emperor's tyrannical rule. Pooling their forces and the skills of political figures such as Mon Mothma, Garm Bel Iblis, and Bail Organa these rebels created a formidable challenge for the Empire. Resourceful and determined, they collected a navy of old ships and an army of the galaxy's disillusioned citizens. Anyone from mercenaries to deposed royalty mingled in the Rebellion's ranks and spread their influence through covert networks that linked so many oppressed civilizations.
Through many small revolts and battles, the Rebellion made itself and its objectives apparent to the Empire, which fought every step of the way to extinguish the fire of the small but mighty Rebellion. Amazingly the Rebels were eventually victorious however when they succeeded in destroying the Empire's last defence - the second Death Star - at the battle of Endor. It was then that the Rebellion evolved into what is now known as the New Republic.
With Mon Mothma at its reigns the New Republic has risen to a state of promising and beneficent leadership. Planets once bound in slavery to the Empire are once again free and represented in the democratic politics of the Republic. Rebel war heroes such as Admiral Ackbar, Han Solo and Leia Organa came to be among the leading diplomats of the New Republic, however their rise to power has not been completely unhindered. With an inexperienced and unstable government in its formative stages comes power struggles between its leaders and the New Republic unfortunately falls victim to internal schisms when countered by Councilor Fey'lya and others who all have different views of how the new regime should be run.
Despite these challenges the New Republic grew in strength while still fighting the feeble protests of the slowly dying Empire. That is, until the fateful day when an Imperial attack managed to wipe out all the Republic's leaders in one fell swoop. Now with no one to provide direction and inspiration, the New Republic flounders. Its citizens want more than ever to maintain the freedom they enjoyed under the Republic, but with no figureheads to look to for leadership, confusion and fear of further Imperial action reign. The New republic maintains its official leadership of the galaxy, however its survival is critical and uncertain. It continues to battle the advances of the Empire, but any internal conflict or heavy attack from the Empire could bring it to an untimely demise.
