Summary: Qui-Gon wakes after crash landing and discovers he has
amnesia.
Timeline: 40 years before TPM

**********

Qui-Gon opened his eyes. He was lying in a bed in a small
alcove. A wall surrounded three sides of the bed, draperies hung
from floor to ceiling on his left. He felt weak and disoriented. He
lay still, gradually noticing the sounds coming from the other side
of the curtains. He heard a woman's voice softly singing, and a
rhythmic creaking. His eyelids began to feel heavy as the combination
of sounds lulled him to sleep.

The aroma of cooking food wafted behind the curtains causing his
groaning stomach to wake him. A tiny blonde head poked through the
curtains. Bright blue eyes sparkled with surprise. The young Jedi
managed what he hoped was a smile.

"Hi!" the toddler said excitedly, then scampered away. Qui-Gon could
hear the small feet padding off. Moments later a young woman with the
same hair and eyes pulled back the curtains.

"Oh my, you are awake!" She said, stunned. "How are you feeling? Are
you hungry? Can I get you some water?"

"I am hungry." He said, his voice sounding hoarse.

"All right, I'll be right back with some soup." She went to a large stove
where a pot sat simmering. She ladled some of the steamy liquid into a
bowl and returned. She sat on the edge of the bed. He tried to sit up but
found he was not strong enough and that his hands and forearms were
covered in bandages. "Don't try to move. I'll feed you." She spread a cloth
under his chin and began to feed him spoonfuls of delicious broth. When
he had finished the soup she brought him some water in a child's sipper
cup. He was able to hold this between his bandaged hands and drink
without help and without spilling any of the water.

"Where am I?" He asked as the young woman returned with a second
cup of water. Close on her heels were two blonde children, one of which
he recognized as the toddler who peeked through the curtain.

"You are on the third moon of the plant Paradise. The Agricultural moon."
She answered smiling.

"How long ago did this happen?" He asked raising his hands.

"It's been over a week now since your ship crashed. I found you in the
orchard and brought you here. Is there anyone I should contact for you?
Your family must be very worried."

He thought long and hard before answering. His ship had crashed more
than a week ago. He had no memory of a crash or even being in a ship.
He realized then that he had no memories at all before waking in this bed.
The urge to panic was great, but he tried to remain calm.

"Are you all right?" The young woman asked looking concerned.

"I'm not sure," he hesitated for a moment to steady himself, "I have no
memory of anything before today."

"After the accident you had you are lucky to be alive. Dr. Vendt did not
expect you to live through that first night. He'll be dropping by again
tomorrow to check on you, maybe he will be able to help you regain
your memory." She felt his face with her hand. "You've got a fever. You'd
better get some rest."

"Wait!" He called as she rose and began to close the drapes. "What's
your name?"

"Oh my!" She laughed. "I'd forgotten about that. I am Kari Hildt and
these are my twins Milo and Nafra."

********

Qui-Gon stared at the dark ceiling overhead. Exhausted yet unable to sleep,
he tried in vain to recall something or even anything from his past. He wondered
if someone somewhere was worried about him or looking for him.

********

"I'm sorry my Masters," Mace Windu began, "there is still no trace of Qui-Gon's
ship. Given the navcom malfunctions of the other starships, we must assume
he had similar problems. He could have come out of hyperspace anywhere. If
he were able he would have contacted us by now. I think it is likely that Qui-Gon
is dead." He stood still in the center of the council chamber, waiting for a reply or
reaction.

Master Yoda who had been listening to Windu's report with his eyes closed suddenly
sprang to life, shattering the silence.

"Alive he is!" He declared. "Feel his Force signature I do. Changed it is, but still
strong. Widen the search you will until found he is."

"Yes Master. What of Master Dooku? Should he be notified of his padawan's disappearance?"
Mace asked.

"He is out of contact in the outer rim on a very important mission." Jedi Master Ora Suul
said.

"Find him you must." Yoda stated.

"Yes Master." Mace Windu bowed to the masters and exited the chamber.

*********

He'd had such high hopes when Dr. Vendt suggested he look at himself in a mirror
to possibly help him regain his memory. It seemed simple yet logical. Now as
the doctor examined him Qui-Gon Jinn sat up in bed staring at his reflection. It was
like looking at a stranger. He studied every detail, but nothing came to him. His
disappointment was so great he had to struggle to keep from crying. He felt lost.

"Does this hurt?" The doctor asked pressing his ribs.

"No." He managed to say in spite of the lump in his throat.

"What about this?" He was applying pressure to the opposite side of his ribcage this
time.

"No."

"I just can't get over this." Dr. Vendt exclaimed. "I've never seen anything like it. Your
healing powers are like nothing I've ever seen before. By all rights you should have been
dead days ago and now you are in near perfect health! It's just amazing!"

Qui-Gon sat in silence letting the man ramble.

"You mustn't be concerned son," the doctor said noting the emotional state of his patient,
"I have every confidence that your memory will return in time. Relax, don't try to force it. I'll
be going to Paradise in a couple of weeks for supplies and while I'm there I'll send out your
description over the holonet. Someone is bound to be missing you." Qui-Gon nodded. "Now
unless I am mistaken, there is probably no reason for you to need these anymore." He
added indicating the bandages that covered both hands and forearms. Dr. Vendt removed
them and remarked again at Qui-Gon's amazing recovery rate.

As the doctor packed up his equipment, the young Jedi buttoned up the long nightshirt
he had been wearing and slid back under his covers. Depressed and tired, he wanted
nothing more than to sleep for a long time.

Dr. Vendt pulled back the drapes that separated the sleeping alcove from the rest of the
house.

"Kari, we've got to think of something to call this boy!" He called.

"Miqa!" Nafra shouted.

"Shhh, play with your brother." The girl's mother scolded gently. Then to the doctor she
said, "I've been reading them some of the old folk tales."

"Ah, Miqa the boy from the stars! Well it's not such a bad idea." Turning back to Qui-Gon
he asked, "What do you think?"

"It's fine."

"Miqa, Miqa, Miqa!" The little girl sang.

"Keep an eye on him for a few days, Kari, he's still running a fever."

**************

Qui-Gon woke with a jerk. He had been dreaming he was lost in an endless fog. In a way
he was, he thought. He peered through the curtain into the main area of the house. Everything
was dark and quiet. Then he noticed Kari asleep in a rocking chair. She was curled up in a ball
with a blanket wrapped around her. He felt very guilty. This young woman had given up her bed
and taken care of him for more than a week. It was time for him to go, to let this family have
their life back. He would find a way to repay Kari for everything she had done for him. Perhaps
Dr. Vendt could help him find a job. This new focus helped him feel more in control of his life,
less lost and afraid. He vowed to make the best of whatever the future held, even if that meant
never regaining his memory.

***********

"Good morning." Qui-Gon said as he emerged from behind the draped alcove. He felt rather
silly standing there in bare feet and a nightshirt.

"Hi!" Nafra called from her seat at the table next to her brother. "Hurt better?"

"Yes, it's much better." He answered smiling at the tiny girl.

"I'm not sure Dr. Vendt would want you out of bed Miqa." Kari said. "Is that name all right
with you?"

"It's fine, and so am I. It's time I was going so you can get on with your lives. As soon as
I get a job I will send you some money to repay you for everything you've done for me. I
thank you for everything and if you would tell me where my clothes are I'll be out of your
way." He hoped he didn't sound unfriendly, but he wanted her to know he had no intention
of taking advantage of her kindness.

Kari sat at the table in stunned silence for a moment. "I'm afraid your clothes were burnt
beyond repair," she said rising from the table. "Why don't you sit down and have some
breakfast with us, then we'll find you something to wear." She dished him up a plate of
food and set it at the table. Qui-Gon took a seat and began to eat. "Since you are determined
to seek employment perhaps you would consider working for me. It's nearly harvest time
and I always hire a couple of workers to help in the orchards. There is even a small cabin
behind the house that you could live in while you are here."

"I think I would like that." Qui-Gon said. This way he could begin repaying her right away,
he thought.

"Good." Kari said returning to her seat. "After breakfast we'll get the cabin cleaned up and
get you moved in. Then I thought you might like to have a look at what's left of your ship."

*********

Dressed in clothes that had belonged to Kari's deceased husband, Qui-Gon looked
and felt ridiculous. His pants stopped mid-calf and he couldn't even begin to button
the shirt or fit into the shoes. So he followed Kari and the twins out to the crash site
in his bare feet.

The ship was nothing but a charred shell now. There were no identifiable marks or features
to be found. It had created a long scorched trench in it's wake. As he looked at the
remains of the ship, Qui-Gon could not imagine how he had survived it.

*********

It was a small cabin, with only one room, but it had a bed, running water, a table
and two chairs. It was nice, but it was not where he belonged or where he wanted
to be. Unable to sleep, he went outside and lay in the grass. It was beautiful here
on this moon, so colorful and alive, with the scent of flowers in the air. It was not
home though. He watched the stars twinkling in the sky above and felt homesick.
For what he didn't know. He knew he belonged out there somewhere and hoped
to return to it someday.

*********

"Only pick the bright red ooyas and whatever you do, don't eat any of them." Kari
was explaining his duties as they tended the vegetable garden.

"I see, you don't want me eating up your profits." He said plucking a weed.

"It's not that." She hesitated, her face reddening. "It's, um, well they are aphrodisiacs.
Powerful ones."

Qui-Gon stopped working and stared at her in disbelief. "What? You're joking
right?"

"No I'm not. This is the only place in the whole galaxy that can grow them. People
have tried to grow them elsewhere, but they never have the same potency."

"That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!"

"Just take my word for it Miqa, it's true." Kari said. "All of the ooyas in my
orchards and everyone else's on this moon go to Paradise."

Qui-Gon returned to his work for a while until curiosity got the better of him. "Can
I ask you something?"

"I suppose." Kari knew what was coming.

"Have you tried them?"

She looked at the children were before answering. They were still napping on
a blanket in the grass nearby. "Yes. My husband and I went to Paradise on our
honeymoon." She felt her face getting hot again.

Qui-Gon wanted to know more, but didn't ask. He now had a new perception of Kari,
one of a sensuous, sexual being. Why he hadn't seen it before he couldn't imagine,
for she was young, pretty and had a very nice body. He supposed he was too busy
feeling sorry for himself to notice earlier. Now he had to throw himself into his work
to keep from staring at her.

*************

Kari had never in her life had so much free time. She marveled at how much easier
life was with Miqa around. He was a hard worker, and picked ooyas faster than anyone
she had ever known. For the first time since her husband's death she did not need to hire
two pickers. Mica was going to have the harvest done in record time. She hoped she could
convince him to stay on for the pruning and seedling planting. It was nice to be able to talk
to someone closer to her own age too, she had to admit. She loved evenings when the
children were in bed and the two of them could relax and talk. She had never realized how
lonely she was until Mica came. She feared the time when his memory returned, because
then he would leave and there would be nothing she could do to stop him. The children
would miss him too. Even Milo liked him now, and Milo usually did not like anyone other
than his sister and herself. Poor Nafra would miss him most of all, she had become very
attached to the young man. Every night now she sat on his lap after dinner and wound his
funny little braid around her finger while he read her a story.

As she sat in the grass with her children making jewelry out of wildflowers, Kari found
herself watching Miqa working in the nearby orchard. It was mid afternoon and he had
abandoned his shirt as he did almost every day at this time. Even at this distance she
could see the sweat glistening off his perfectly sculpted chest and back. Her attraction
to him was growing more powerful every day. It seemed the more she told herself he was
too young for her the more she thought of them together.

*********

Just one more ooya and he would have another tree harvested. If he could just stretch
his arm far enough to reach it without having to move the repulsor platform he could start
on the next tree that much sooner. He stretched his arm out as far as he could but it just
wasn't close enough. His finger tips almost touched the fruit but not quite. If only a gust of
wind would knock it free and blow it into his hand. No sooner had that thought crossed his
mind than the ooya hopped right into his hand. Stunned, he looked at the fruit for a second
then put it into the bag slung over his shoulder with the others. There had been no wind, how
had that happened? He thumbed the platform controls and floated to the next tree. He began
picking fruit again, still puzzling the event in his mind, until he decided to try for an out of
reach one again. This one was a little farther away than the last. He reached for it, nothing
happened. He tried again. 'Do or do not, there is no try.' "Yes Master." he said without thought.
He reached out again envisioning the fruit's stem letting go of the branch and gliding into his
hand and the next thing he knew it was there. Looking at the fruit in his palm, he then realized
what had just happened; he remembered something! He whooped loudly, removed the bag from
his shoulder and jumped from the platform, running to Kari and the twins.

"I remembered something!" He shouted again and again until he reached them.

"What?!" Kari asked as she was being swung around in a circle by a happy young man.

"I remembered words a teacher or someone told me! I can still hear his voice!" His excitement
was contagious, the children jumped up and down as he spoke. "And something else too,
watch!" He stretched his hand toward the flower necklace on the ground where Kari had been
sitting and concentrated. Nafra and Milo cheered as it rose, floating up and over Kari's head
and coming to rest around her neck.

Kari did not know what to think, but the children began to shout "Me! Me!"

He did two at once this time, lifting them from the ground, then placing the flowered jewelry
over the children's heads. They cheered, Kari hugged him.

"I'm so happy for you Miqa!" She said against a sweaty shoulder. "Now you know it's going
to all come back!"

********

Qui-Gon sat alone in the dark on the front steps of Kari's house. She was inside putting
Milo and Nafra to bed. It had been nearly a week since he had had his memory flashback
and nothing else had come back to him since that time. He was beginning to wonder if
anything ever would. The harvest was done, tomorrow he would start pruning the ooya trees
in the orchards that would be harvested next season. When that was done Kari wanted him
to plant seedlings. He was grateful to her for finding work for him, but he knew he couldn't
stay here forever. Depression was gnawing away at him and he couldn't seem to shake it
off. He looked up at the stars. Where was his family and why hadn't they found him yet?
Dr. Vendt had gone to Paradise weeks ago. If anyone was searching for him they would
surely have seen the doctor's notice on the holonet by now.

"What's wrong Miqa?" Kari sat beside him on the step. "You have been so quiet lately,
I know something is bothering you. What is it?" She took his hand in hers, holding it tight.

Qui-Gon sighed. "I guess I'm just frustrated with myself. I don't know if my memory will
ever return. If I'll ever be able to go home." He swallowed hard, trying to dispell the lump
in his throat.

Kari rested her head on his shoulder and spoke softly, "We don't want you to go Miqa.
We want you to stay here with us."

Surprised, he looked at her as she reached up to kiss his lips. Taking her in his arms,
he returned her kiss with a passion he didn't know he possessed. Kari was joyously
swept away by his intensity. It had been so long since a man had held her like this.
Her body tingled with excitement, her heart pounding furiously in her chest. She had to
have him right now! She broke from his lips and tugged his shirt off over his head. Kari
let her hands roam over his broad chest, taking in every magnificent detail. He moaned
softly, his body shuddering as she pressed a hand over his clothed erection. He was
huge! Kari suddenly found herself lifted like a toy and set down straddling his thighs.
Qui-Gon nibbled and sucked her neck as he removed her blouse. He squeezed and
groped her full breasts sucking the hardened nipples until they were raw. Kari was
dizzy with anticipation and ready to come. Qui-Gon massaged her mound through
the fabric of her pants, finding it wet. He pressed her against his now very painful
erection, grinding their still clothed genitalia together. Unable to hold back, Kari
gripped his shoulders tightly as her orgasm shot through. She collapsed, panting
against him when it had passed. He held her close for a moment then reached a
hand down to unfasten her pants. He slipped it inside to find her hot wet opening.
He slipped a finger, then another inside as she quietly called his name. He removed
his fingers, spreading her juices on her nipples, then sucking the sweetness away.

The scent and taste of her sex took Qui-Gon to the limit of his control. He lay her
on the porch, the two of them working together to remove her pants. He tore his off
in a flash, settling between her spread legs. He entered with a groan, trying to hold
on until he was buried deep inside her. Kari wrapped her legs around his waist, her nails
digging into his back as he sank deeper and deeper inside. He kept coming and she
thought she would pass out from sheer pleasure. Suddenly thrusting her head back
she found herself coming again. He pumped fast and hard, pulling most of the way
out and slamming all the way back in. As her orgasm subsided his began. His body
stiffened, his movements becoming jerky as he burst inside her. Breathless and
sweat soaked he collapsed on top of her. They lay there unmoving for a long time
before retiring to Kari's bed.

***********

Guilt weighed heavily on Qui-Gon's conscience. As he replayed the events of the
previous night over and over in his head he was afraid he may have led her to believe
that his feelings for her were stronger than they really were. He would have to
apologize immediately for that. The night had been remarkable though, he had to admit.
Just thinking about it made his penis swell.

"Good morning." Kari said sitting up with a smile on her face. Her breasts were
bruised, the nipples looking red and sore. Noticing the concerned look on his face
she added, "Don't worry about it, your back looks worse."

"Kari," he began. "I don't want to hurt you."

She kissed his lips. "I know that. I also know that when your memory returns you'll
want to go back to your old life. So please don't worry or feel guilty. If anyone should
feel guilty here it's me for taking advantage of you when you were feeling so low."
She lay back down, resting her head on his chest. "Just know that you are welcome
to stay, but not expected to stay."

"Thank you." He said stroking her soft blonde hair.

*********

Qui-Gon moved back into the house with Kari and the children after that. He had
small flashes of memories return to him from time to time, but nothing substantial
enough to help him remember his name or where he was from. He continued to
work in the orchards. He took pride in the fact that the tiny seedlings he had planted
were growing strong and healthy and in a few seasons would be ready for harvesting.
He found there was always plenty to do to keep him busy, he had even built the children
a playhouse near the vegetable garden, but he made time every day for meditation. It
gave him great comfort and he was certain it was part of his old life. He still yearned to
return to it, but he was becoming more content in his life with Kari, Milo, and Nafra.

**********

"I've found him!" Mace Windu exclaimed, breaking the silence of the meditation chamber.
For nearly three months the Jedi had been searching for the missing padawan. Master
Yoda had felt the young man's presence in the Force and had made finding Qui-Gon
Mace's primary responsibility. Pressure had been building lately because Qui-Gon's
master would return from the outer rim soon and no one wanted to tell him his padawan
was missing. Mace also knew that Master Yoda missed the young man very much. The
wisened Jedi had instructed him to contact him the moment Qui-Gon was found.

"Padawan Jinn?" Yoda asked, instantly coming out of meditation.

"Yes my Master." Mace took a breath to relax himself before continuing. "I ran into a
holonet bulletin from a doctor who practices on the Agricultural moon of Paradise. He
has been treating an amnesiac whose ship crashed there about the same time Qui-Gon
disappeared. His description fits Qui-Gon and the doctor states that the young man
recovered from what should have been fatal wounds in a week. It has to be him!"

"Contacted this doctor you have?"

"No Master. There is no method of long range communication to the Ag moon. He must
have gone to Paradise to place the bulletin on the holonet. I will go to the Agricultural
moon, find the doctor, and bring Qui-Gon back."

"Accompany you I will." Yoda hopped off his meditation stool. "Bring our boy home
we will."

*************

Qui-Gon woke to an unusually quiet house. Slipping his sleep pants on, he went
into the main room of the house. Kari was placing a dish of cut red fruit on the table.
She was dressed in his sleep shirt and nothing else. He looked around, Nafra and
Milo were nowhere to be found.

"Where are the children?" He asked.

"My mother picked them up about an hour ago. They are spending the night with her.
I stopped by her house when I was in town yesterday and asked her to keep them
for the day." She was beaming. "Come and eat your breakfast, I've already had mine."

It was then that he noticed it was ooyas on the plate. He took his seat at once and
began to eat. It was sweet and juicy. "I thought all of this was sent to Paradise." He
said, already beginning to feel the effects.

"I forgot to mention I keep a few on hand to help ease tension." Kari sat on his lap,
her hand slipping inside his sleep pants. She began stroking the already hard organ.

*******

Something was different about today, but Qui-Gon could not put his finger on what it
was. He had felt it as soon as he had awoke in the morning and it was with him still.
His work in the orchards done for the day, he sat beneath an ooya tree to meditate.
He cleared his mind, allowing his body to relax. Moments later he shot to his feet as
he felt a familiar presence. No one was there, yet the feeling persisted. Sitting back
down he concentrated on the presence. It was warm and comforting. It was something
or someone from his past and it was getting stronger. Rising again he headed for the
road at the end of the orchard that led into town. His brisk walk turned to a run as the
sound of an approaching speeder broke the quiet of the afternoon. He recognized it as
Dr. Vendt's. It came to a stop in the middle of the road right in front of him. His heart
beat excitedly as the doctor and two companions exited the vehicle.

"Master Yoda!" Qui-Gon exclaimed and in a flash his whole world was returned to him.
Overwhelmed the young man fell sobbing to his knees, head down. Yoda patted the
padawan's back as he continued to cry.

Mace Windu exchanged words with Dr. Vendt who then got back into his speeder and
headed on to Kari's house. Qui-Gon wiped his face, then looked into the kind eyes of the
Jedi master.

"Wrong you were, young one, to think no one was looking for you." Yoda said.

"Yes Master." Qui-Gon beamed. Yoda had not called him that in years, and he remembered
it! He remembered everything! "Where is Master Dooku?"

"Still in the outer rim." Mace answered.

"Get you home now we must. Much time have you lost in your training." The diminutive
Jedi stated.

The three of them walked to Kari's house, where Kari, the twins, and Dr. Vendt stood
waiting. Nafra and Milo were immediately taken with Yoda.

"Hi!" Nafra said. Milo smiled shyly but did not speak. "Play!" Nafra and Milo each took hold
of a hand and led the Jedi master to the small playhouse Qui-Gon had built for them.

Qui-Gon and Kari went in the house. He took her hands in his.

"Qui-Gon Jinn." Kari said slowly. "It suits you."

"Kari..."

"You know I knew you were special," she interrupted, knowing that what he was about to say
would bring her to tears, "but a Jedi Knight!"

"Only a padawan until I pass the trials." He took her in his arms, a lump rising in his throat.
He desperately wanted to return to his life, but leaving her was the hardest thing he had ever
had to do. He did not know what to say.

Kari held tight to him one last time as tears spilled down her cheeks. "You'd better go before
the twins try to dress your friend in their play clothes."

"I'll never forget you Kari, and everything you've done for me." He kissed her quick, then went
outside. Dr. Vendt, Yoda, and Mace stood waiting beside the speeder. He hurried down the
front steps, Kari followed. He knelt down in front of Nafra and Milo, hugging them both. The
lump in his throat continuing to grow. "I had a nice time staying with you and your mommy,
but it's time for me to go home now. I'm going to miss you guys, but I'll come back for a visit
someday. You two be good and take care of your Mommy, okay?" Crying, they both nodded.
He kissed them each on the forehead then rose to join the others.

"Miqa!" Nafra cried and attached herself to his leg. Milo followed grabbing Qui-Gon's other leg.

Kari came and took each by the hand. "Goodbye Qui-Gon." She said smiling through her tears.
He waved and disappeared inside the speeder.

*********

Qui-Gon returned to visit twice a year until the time he found Kari remarried to a man that the
twins adored.
